How to Transfer Windows 10 license to a new Computer

Although when you buy a new computer or laptop, usually a copy of Windows 10 comes preinstalled and activated, this is not the case when you build a custom PC and install a copy of Windows 10 as an operating system; you will definitely need a product key to activate Windows 10.

However, if you have an old computer running on Windows 10, and you’re upgrading from. In this case, you can transfer Windows 10 license to a new Computer to activate the Windows.

Instead of buying a new Windows 10 product, transferring the license key from the old computer to a new one is cost-efficient and saves a few hundred dollars.

Transfer Windows 10 license to new Computer

If you have a license key, you can easily transfer Windows 10 license to a new computer to activate the copy of Windows 10. First of all, you have to remove the license key from the old computer, then activate Windows 10 on the new computer with the same key.

You can only activate Windows if the new computer has the same edition of Windows 10 installed. Suppose your old computer is running on Windows 10 Home, and the new computer has Windows 10 Pro installed; you cannot use the Home license to Pro edition.

This guide assumes that you have an activation-ready license key to transfer to a new computer.

Remove the Product key on the old computer

To activate the license on a new computer, first, you have to uninstall the license key from the old computer. To do this, follow the steps.

  1. Open the Start Menu.
  2. Search “Command Prompt” in the search result.
  3. Right-click the command prompt and select run as administrator.
  4. Now, type the following command and then hit the enter button to uninstall the current product key.

You should see a successful confirmation message “Uninstalled product key successfully” dialog box; if not see, run the command again and again until you get a confirmation message.

  1. Type the following command and then hit the enter button to clear the license registry from the Windows registry.
command: slmgr /cpky

Once you’ve completed these steps, you’re ready to activate your new computer with the same license key. You can only activate the same edition of Windows 10 you were using on the old computer.

Activate Windows 10 on a new computer

You have couple of ways to activate windows 10. Follow the steps to activate Windows 10 properly.

1. Activate Windows 10 using Windows 10’s Settings

You can directly go to the Activation page and enter the 25 digit product key to activate the copy of Windows 10 on your computer. Follow the steps below to activate the Windows.

  1. Click the Start Menu button.
  2. Then, click the settings gear icon button to open Windows 10’s settings.
  3. Go to the Update & Security > Activation.
  4. Click the “Enter the product key” option.
  5. Enter 25 digit product key.
  6. Click the Activate button to activate the license.

Once you’ve completed these steps, your Windows 10 should activate successfully.

2. Activate using Command Prompt

You can also use the command prompt to register a product key. Follow the steps.

  1. Click the Start Menu button.
  2. Search command prompt in the search box.
  3. Right-click the command prompt, and select run as administrator.
  4. In the command prompt type the following command, then hit the enter button.
command: slmgr /ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

Where xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx is your product key.

  1. Type the following command to verify the activation, then hit the enter button.
command: slmgr /dlv
  1. A small window will popup where you can confirm the “License Status” section status reads “Licensed” to verify that Windows has successfully activated.

Once you’ve completed all these steps, Windows 10 should activate successfully. To check the activation status, you can also go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation.

3. Activate using Microsoft Support

If activation didn’t successful using command prompt, you can contact Microsoft support to complete the activation.

  1. Click the Start Menu button.
  2. Search “Command Prompt” in the search box.
  3. Right-click the command prompt in the search result, and select run as administrator.
  4. Type the following command in the command prompt, then hit the enter button.

  1. Select your country or region.
  2. Click the Next button to continue to the further steps.
  3. Use the toll-free number to call the Microsoft support team, and share the installation ID with them. They will give you back a “Confirmation ID” to activate the product.
    “You can also use the “Get Help” app to contact with Microsoft support team on chat.”

  2. Enter the “Confirmation ID” provided by the Microsoft support team.

Once you’ve completed all these steps, Windows 10 should activate successfully.

If you’re thinking you can transfer Windows 10 home license to a new computer running on Windows 10 Pro, you should understand, you cannot do this; this is not possible. You can only activate the same edition of Windows 10 with the product key.
